Josie Stewart: visual artist, designer-maker and dancer.
I work freelance managing and delivering arts programs, workshops and sessions with schools and community groups and on independent projects; carnivals, performances, processions, displays and in the creation of purposeful indoor and outdoor spaces. I am also a professionally trained and experienced teacher and have taught a broad range of arts based subjects as well as in other school curriculum areas in primary, middle, secondary schools and further education colleges.
My travels, adventure and Eastern philosophy have taught me to be versatile and holistic in my way of living. My experience as a schoolteacher taught me to be organized and structured within creative frameworks. I gained valuable experience in project and events management whilst working in Darlington for the Arts Development Team and in various roles for Creative Partnerships Tees Valley.
I continue to work on CP schools projects as an artist deliverer.
For any project I provide a frame which outlines the whole lifecycle of the project: planning, structure, time schedule, aims and objectives, budget, materials, resources, process, documentation and evaluation.
I collaborate closely with staff in order to get the best from any endeavor.
I am based in Newcastle upon Tyne and travel around the NE from Northumberland to the Tees Valley and beyond.
Ethos:
I believe that creativity is an energizing and experiential process natural to everyone. Given the right environment, we can all enjoy and develop our preferences, skills and abilities. My artistic style and approach to making art work and delivering projects reflects this essence of diversity whilst finding new contexts and different materials to express meaning.
My artwork and the works which I help others create grow out of an eclectic mix of inspirations and are shaped by the parameters, themes, materials, processes and aims of the intended project.
I have always danced and value the ability to move and create through physical interaction. I teach and provide dance for primary age groups, social dance or more performance based work which can integrate with other art forms.
I work with any age and ability groups.
I am artistic director of WeeSpiders, an arts organization which uses and teaches about new technologies and digital media combining with more traditional processes including the performing arts to learn about and from nature and culture.
